A braided flexible hose has a service life of roughly five to seven years. When one lets go under a sink it does not drip, it runs at full mains pressure until somebody finds it. We check the age and condition of every accessible hose, seal and connector on the fixtures we are working on, and replace what is past it. It is a small job that heads off the single biggest claim in domestic plumbing.

How do I tell how old my flexi hoses are?
There is a date stamped into the metal collar at the end of the hose. If it is more than about seven years old, replace it. If you cannot find a date at all, it is old.
Are the cheap hoses from the hardware shop good enough?
Only if they carry a WaterMark certification. The uncertified ones are the ones that let go, and they will also give an insurer a reason to argue about the claim.
Can I just replace them myself?
The hoses, sometimes. The isolation valve behind them, no, and on an older house that valve is usually the part that has seized solid.
